❄️ Back at it, Roomies. Harrisburg strikes again.
It’s me, AliasRZ, back after an eventful and extremely frustrating day navigating the mess that is Harrisburg in the snow.
So, just recently, I set up a P.O. Box for ups so I can get my packages whenever, without the bull of dealing with the school. So, like many people at HU, I don’t have a car or anyone to drive me around, unfortunately.
So, I recently set up a P.O. Box at UPS to avoid the absolute circus that is our campus mail system. Simple enough, right? Like many HU students, I don’t have a car or a ride, so I took an Uber after classes. Got to UPS, picked up my package, no problem. Smooth, fast. I figured I’d walk back; school’s not that far and Uber wanted $22 for a 7-minute drive (seriously, $22???). (ノ-_-)ノ~┻━┻
So since the school building isn’t that far, I decided to walk back to my dorm. Now here’s where the chaos starts.
Unfortunately, I’m some dumbass for expecting the cities of Lemoyne and Harrisburg to clean up the crosswalks/streets. So the sidewalks were covered with snow, not just that, but you know, the areas at the end of a crosswalk where those yellow bumps are for crossing? Yeah, for some reason, they were fully covered in knee-deep snow.
You want to know how I found that out? I found that out the fun way: I stepped on what I thought was packed snow, only to plunge my whole leg into knee-deep slush. Love that for me. (I’m 5’1″, btw.) It went all the way up my leg, and it was freezing cold after I got it out.
So, anyway, when I tried to go onto the bridge, the pedestrian area/walkable part of the bridge, it was covered with hard snow that went halfway up to the safety railing. I was pissed like how do you expect me to walk onto that???
And guess what? The nearest bridge was also far away, and I didn’t want to deal with more problems, so I sucked it up and got an Uber that was thankfully cheap enough and close enough to finally pick me up and drop me off near the dorm.
Like I would understand to a degree if it were a day after the recent snowstorm however…
The real kicker?
It’s been a full-ass week since the snowstorm.
Like… what if someone was in a wheelchair, or had a cane, or just can’t risk slipping? Now they’re stuck, either freezing their ass off waiting for a bus or forced to pay for a ride because the city can’t be bothered.
If we’re supposed to be a “walkable” city, how about starting with walkable sidewalks?
