HU Tea/Harrisburg Culture & Vibes

Esports at HU: Solid Start, But Kinda… Basic?

Heya roomies, it’s AliasRZ, back from the dead after weeks of not posting. Today I want to talk about the esports aspect of Harrisburg University.

Everyone knows we’ve got our own HU Storm teams, esports majors, and open classes for anyone who wants in regardless of your major.

At our school, our esports team plays the usual stuff, such as Valorant, SSBU, Rocket League, and many other popular games on the market.
But damn, it gets repetitive fast when that’s literally the menu. Kinda disappointing from a STEM school that prides itself on innovation and cutting-edge stuff.

I’ve played games with growing (or at least dedicated) esports scenes that feel way more interesting, like War Thunder. Yeah, it’s niche both online and more so at the school, has its share of balance and grind complaints, and plenty in the community question whether it’s truly ready for esports.

But still, it would be nice to see some variety beyond the standard lineup that every university esports program seems to copy. Right now it kind of feels like:

“Pick the safest competitive games and call it a day.”

Which is understandable from a university standpoint since they likely don’t want to risk it, but a little disappointing from a school that’s supposed to be leading in tech and esports education.

Don’t get me wrong, as mentioned again, the HU esports program is still a cool opportunity for students who want to compete or get involved in the industry. I just wish the game roster felt a little less predictable.

Because when you market yourself as an esports-focused university, you’d expect at least a bit more experimentation beyond the usual suspects.

Anyway, that’s my little nitpick for today.

See you next post, Roomies.
